UNIFIMEX and FIBA Launch Binational AML Committee and New Agenda to Combat Illicit Finance

  • UNIFIMEX and FIBA signed a Memorandum of Understanding and established the FIBA–UNIFIMEX Binational AML Committee during the AML International Summit 2026.
  • Financial institutions from both countries will lead an ongoing agenda addressing cross-border financial risks.
  • Correspondent banking, remittances, and secure information sharing are among the key priorities of the new binational agenda.

Mexico City.– The Unión de Instituciones Financieras Mexicanas (UNIFIMEX) and the Financial & International Business Association (FIBA) launched a new binational cooperation agenda focused on financial integrity through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and the establishment of the FIBA–UNIFIMEX Binational AML Committee, during the AML International Summit 2026: Financial Integrity and Effectiveness.

The new Committee establishes a permanent platform for collaboration among financial institutions from Mexico and the United States, operating under a shared leadership structure. Banco Pichincha and Sunwest Bank, representing FIBA, together with BanCoppel and Banco Azteca, representing UNIFIMEX, form the initial leadership of this initiative, alongside the other financial institutions that are members of both associations.

The partnership was formally established through the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding by David Schwartz, President & CEO of FIBA, and Soraya Pérez Munguía, Executive President of UNIFIMEX, with Harry Cupp, FIBA AML Chair, and Alberto Bringas, UNIFIMEX AML Chair, serving as witnesses to the signing.

As part of this agenda, a binational financial cooperation panel was held, featuring representatives from the four institutions leading the Committee. The discussion addressed key shared challenges in preventing illicit finance and explored opportunities to strengthen cooperation among financial institutions in both countries.

On the same day, the First Meeting of the Binational Committee also took place, formally launching a work agenda that includes the exchange of experiences and best practices, the analysis of cross-border risks and typologies, correspondent banking, remittances, emerging technologies, and the development of secure information-sharing mechanisms, as well as training activities and joint initiatives.

This partnership is part of UNIFIMEX’s Financial Integrity Agenda, which seeks to strengthen risk prevention and mitigation, transform information into actionable intelligence, expand domestic and international cooperation, and contribute to more effective public policies.
